What is antiwrinkle treatment?
Antiwrinkle treatment is used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas include fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, crows feet and lines around the lips. Other commonly treated areas also include slimming the lower face, adding definition to the jawline, lifting the corners of the mouth and relaxing the chin.
Wrinkles on the face develop primarily due to repetitive muscle movements as we express ourselves in our day to day lives. Over time, if untreated, those movements create permanent fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkle treatment is performed using neuromodulators such as Botox®, Dysport® and Nuceiva®. Using a small needle, the product is injected into the targeted muscles that are responsible for creating those wrinkles. The product inhibits muscle movement, therefore relaxing wrinkles. Following treatment, it will take 3 to 5 days to start noticing the effects, which will continue up until 14 days post treatment.
The treatment is performed using an exceptionally small needle. Most patients describe the procedure as “quick and painless”. There is no burning or stinging when the product is injected, so other than a small pin prick of the initial injection, the procedure is painless. Patients are able to resume their usual daily activities immediately following treatment.
Before treatment:
- Avoid unnecessary blood thinning products such as alcoholic beverages, advil, aleve, vitamin E, gingko, fish oil, and omega 3 to reduce the risk of bruising.
After treatment:
- Avoid rubbing the affected area for the rest of the day
- Avoid laying flat or keeping the head down for 4 hours after treatment
- Avoid strenuous activity or extreme heat such as hot tubs or saunas for 24 hours.
An initial appointment can take up to 45 minutes, during which a thorough medical history and consultation with one of our nurses and nurse practitioner will be completed. This is to ensure your treatment is customized to your unique goals.
The treatment itself takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes. During which your provider may use a vibration tool or topical numbing for mild discomfort if requested, although not usually required.
Typically treatment will begin to take effect after 2 days with full results by 2 weeks. A follow up visit is recommended after your first treatment to ensure you are satisfied with your results. The follow up appointment will take place 2 weeks after initial treatment. The effects of anti-wrinkle injections typically last 3-5 months although there are many factors that can influence duration of treatment.
